In Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul's appearance is inspired by a nightmare of designer Iain McCaig's, which is a red-and-black facepaint inspired by his fear of clowns.
Created in ZBrush, texture in PTS, the face paint was then projected in After Effects using Freeform plug-in.
